On Friday, November 20, 2009, at 3:30am, the victim, W/M, was walking
in the 600 block of Royal when he was approached by an unknown black
male. The suspect struck the victim and took the wallet from the
victim?s pocket and attempted to flee the scene. A passing unit
observed the suspect and apprehended him.

The suspect was identified as Jerry Lewis, B/M, 11-29-56. Additional

On Monday, November 16, 2009, at 11:15pm, the victims, 2 W/Ms, were
walking in the 1300 block of Bourbon, when they were approached by an
unknown black male. The suspect produced a pistol and demanded
money. The victims complied and the suspect fled into a vehicle
parked on Esplanade. The vehicle fled on Esplanade, turning on
Charters toward Elysian Fields, then unknown.

The suspect is described as a black male, 20-25, 5?08?, 150lbs, thin
build, dark complexion, wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

unknown black males. The suspects produced pistols and demanded
money. The victim complied and the suspects fled on foot on Bienville
toward N Rampart, then unknown.

The suspects are described as (1) a black male, 16-18, 5?11?, 150lbs,
shorts hair, brown complexion, wearing a dark hoodie, and (2) a black
male, 16-18, 5?08?, 140lbs, shorts hair, brown complexion, wearing a
navy blue fleece.

by an unknown black male. A verbal altercation began and the suspect
produced an unknown object and cut the victim on the arm. The suspect
then fled into a blue four door Lexus, which fled on N Peters toward
Canal, then unknown.

Doctor Found Stabbed To Death In Burning NOLA Home

New Orleans authorities said someone stabbed a 45-year-old plastic surgeon and then set fire to his French Quarter apartment.

Coroner John Gagliano identified the victim found early Saturday as Ralph Newsome. Tulane spokesman Keith Brannon said Newsome was a plastic surgeon who specialized in reconstructive surgery and skin cancer and taught at Tulane University’s School of Medicine.

Police said firefighters found Newsome’s body on the second floor of 926 Toulouse St. just after 3 a.m. Police have called the death a homicide, saying the man suffered from apparent stab wound and that the perpetrator may have set the fire to hide any evidence.

When firefighters went to the scene, they found a two-story dwelling with smoke exiting the attic. After investigating further, District Chief Chris Mickal said he noticed a heavily involved fire in the rear attic area of the structure, which is when second and third alarms were struck.

Residents in the area notified firefighters that the homeowner had not exited the dwelling and may have still been inside. Fire Department spokesman Edwin Holmes said firefighters broke into the burning apartment and found the body on the second floor.

Newsome was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During the investigation of the incident fire department personnel found an accelerant, believed to be gasoline, at the scene that may have been used to start the fire. The cause of the fire is listed as arson.

Officials at Tulane University said they plan to offer grief counseling services to staff and students affected by the loss.

People who knew Newsome said his death was not only a loss for Tulane Medical School but to many who live in the French Quarter community.

Newsome was known for being an avid gardener and friends and relatives remembered the doctor by placing flowers where his home used to stand on Toulouse Street.

His neighbors said they still couldn’t believe Newsome died in such a violent manner.

“It’s shocking,” said Keith Wesley, who lived down the street from the victim. “They need to step up patrols. You see the police out here and they are prevalent and they are doing their job. (I) guess no matter where you are at, anything could happen.”

The man found murdered inside of a burning French Quarter?house this morning was a plastic surgeon at Tulane University’s School of Medicine.

Dr. Ralph NewsomeNewsome was 45, according to university officials. He?received his medical doctorate?from the University of South Alabama and completed a residency in general surgery there.

He served as a plastic surgery resident at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and in 1998 joined the Tulane School of Medicine faculty as a plastic surgery instructor.

Among his specialties were?reconstructive surgery, complex wounds, skin cancer and melanoma, according to a statement from the university.

An ornate interior garden that Newsome built at his home was open for touring the afternoon of Oct. 11.

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Police are investigating the murder of Dr. Ralph Edward Newsome, a prominent Tulane University plastic surgeon and medical instructor.

Just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, New Orleans Firefighters arrived to find a three-story townhouse on fire, in the 900 block of Toulouse Street. When firefighters went inside, they found Dr. Newsome with multiple stab wounds on his body. Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are now investigating the case as a murder.

“That’s unbelievable because we’ve never, since we’ve been living down here, heard anything like that, or known of anyone going inside a house to kill someone. I would think it would be someone who knew the person, rather than just random,” said Ellie Idelowitz, a French Quarter resident.

Dr. Newsome was a prominent plastic and reconstructive surgeon, as well as an instructor, at Tulane University’s School of Medicine. He moved to New Orleans more than a decade ago and treated patients in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. His home and garden occasionally opened to the public, as part of a French Quarter garden tour.

“He was so deeply committed to this city and wanted to spend his entire life making health care here better for all of the citizens of this city and this region,” said Dr. Douglas Slakey, Tulane’s Chairman of Surgery and a friend of Dr. Newsome’s. “I think he really embodied what we love about New Orleans.”

Now, friends and loved ones are left to deal with the aftermath of the violent way Dr. Newsome’s life ended.

“I think it’s a public health crisis that we do something about the violence in the city, and try to prevent these sort of things in the future,” Dr. Slakey said.

Tulane University officials said they plans to offer counseling to the staff and students who knew Dr. Newsome. Five days after?a prominent Tulane University?plastic surgeon?was stabbed to death and his French Quarter home set on fire, police say they continue to work “promising leads”?in the case but declined to name any suspects in the brutal Halloween?murder.

Meanwhile, hundreds of members of Tulane’s medical community packed a memorial service at the school’s auditorium Wednesday?to remember?Dr. Ralph Edward Newsome, 45, a gifted surgeon known for?his work with?trauma victims and skin cancer patients.

Newsome, known to most as “Edward,”?was stabbed inside his townhouse in the 900 block of Toulouse Street on Saturday around 3:30 a.m. His home was then torched in an apparent attempt to cover up the crime, according to authorities.

During the memorial service,?clinical surgery instructor Dr. David Jansen recalled how Newsome helped him remove a boy’s leg and put it on “full bypass” for 10 hours while a tumor was removed, a procedure Jansen said he had never seen done before.

Others?thanked Newsome?for the six years he spent rifling through?mounds of paperwork?to reaccredit Tulane’s plastic surgery residency program, which ceased to operate six months after he joined the faculty in 1998.

Still others said the Alabama native will be remembered?as a physician?deeply concerned with the quality of life of both his patients and?colleagues.

Dr. Douglas Slakey, chairman of Tulane’s surgery department, broke down in tears while describing how Newsome grilled burgers for his staff during a recent hurricane evacation.

“He touched so many of us,” Slakey said.

Newsome is survived by his parents, two sisters, a niece and a nephew.
